Democrat Mike Johnston suspended his campaign Tuesday for the seat held by U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo. The former state senator, who has led a crowded primary field in fundraising, said he doesn't want to run the kind of "expensive and negative" campaign it would take to secure the nomination since former Gov. John Hickenlooper entered the race. "To win this Democratic primary would now require an expensive and negative campaign," Johnston said in a statement. "That is not who I am, and no race is worth conceding victory to a brand of broken politics that I have spent my life trying to change."

Business Roundtable used an August 25 online column, "Welcoming the Debate," to respond to the most frequent questions around its recent Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation. The column reaffirmed the statement as an "an unambiguous defense of the free market system" while stressing, "It was time to reflect more accurately how our CEOs operate their companies and to challenge each other to do more." Business Roundtable is not abandoning shareholders nor is it supporting radical changes to corporate governance structures, the column said. CEOs also share common priorities around supporting higher wages, training and education, as well as an emphasis on the long-term creation of value, the column concluded. President & CEO Joshua Bolten discussed the statement on "Face the Nation," rejecting criticism that Business Roundtable was only reacting to political pressure. The statement continued to receive extensive news coverage and commentary.

Comcast is committed to closing the digital divide for all Coloradans. Merging two Denver-based oil and gas companies into the state's second-largest oil producer will focus hundreds of millions of annual oilfield investment locally by a company committed to protecting Colorado's public and environment, a top executive behind the deal says. PDC Energy Inc revealed Monday it's acquiring SRC Energy Inc. in a $1.7 billion, all-stock deal expected to close later this year. Both companies are significant players in the Denver-Julesburg Basin in Weld County, with all of SRC Energy's oil production and 75% of PDC Energy's coming from there.

Appearing on CBS "Face the Nation" Sunday, Business Roundtable President & CEO Joshua Bolten said CEOs are increasingly concerned by the "tit for tat" retaliations that are escalating the U.S.-China trade war. While reiterating Business Roundtable support for the Administration's goal of addressing China's unfair trade practices, Bolten took issue with the President telling U.S. companies via Twitter to move their businesses out of China. The tweet implied that "he thinks it would be either benign or maybe even helpful for the United States to decouple completely from the Chinese economy," Bolten said. "That would be a disaster. Not just for the Chinese, for the global economy and for the United States." (See video and transcript, and August 23 Roundtable statement.) In an interview Wednesday on NPR, Tom Linebarger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cummins and Chair of the Business Roundtable Trade and International Committee, also detailed the economic consequences of the U.S.-China conflict and noted CEOs' frequent communication with the Administration on trade issues.

Gov. Jared Polis asked for bankers' help in achieving one of his administration's goals at the Colorado Bankers Association's second-ever banking and cannabis conference on Monday afternoon. "My administration has a goal to increase banking and financial services for cannabis and hemp by 20% by July of 2020, and, of course, we need your help as partners to accomplish that," Polis told a room packed with bankers in a Grand Hyatt ballroom in downtown Denver.

Energy policymakers and political leaders not long ago called natural gas the "bridge fuel" that could clean U.S. electrical power and help push coal-fired power plants into extinction. Today, with coal fading away, natural gas is becoming climate enemy No. 1. As consumption and production of the fuel breaks records in the U.S., natural gas is increasingly viewed as a fossil fuel to be eliminated if goals to ward off the worst effects of climate change are to be met.

President Donald J. Trump Secured A Better Deal For America With USMCA

Officials and business leaders across the country are emphasizing the necessity of adopting the USMCA to fuel the economy and support the manufacturing and agricultural industries.

SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE SONNY PERDUE IN HERALD & REVIEW: USMCA Keeps Illinois Farmers Leading the Pack

"Illinois stands to benefit in every way with USMCA. Illinois' farmers, ranchers, and workers are some of the most productive in the world and the future looks bright with USMCA. Now it's up to Congress to take the next step and ratify USMCA as soon as they return from the August Recess."

DEPUTY SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE STEPHEN CENSKY IN THE FRESNO BEE: USMCA: A Better Trade Deal that Keeps California Agriculture Competitive

"Agriculture supports nearly 240,000 jobs in California and creates more than $29 billion in value annually. Trade with our neighbors to the north and south helps support this industry, and the passage of USMCA will only further advance and grow California's economy, specifically the agriculture industry. President Donald J. Trump is fighting for new and better trade deals for America's farmers, ranchers, and producers. The president has won a better deal for America in USMCA."

AGRICULTURE UNDER SECRETARY BILL NORTHEY IN THE DES MOINES REGISTER: The USMCA Is a 'Big Win' for Iowa's Agriculture Industry

"America's farmers and ranchers are the most productive in the world. Generations of Iowans have devoted their lives to feeding America. It is USDA's role to help open and expand markets to sell the bounty of our American harvest around the globe. With USMCA, President Trump has delivered on a better deal that will greatly benefit our agriculture industry."

SENATOR CHUCK GRASSLEY IN THE QUAD-CITY TIMES: It's Time to Pass the USMCA

"If ratified by Congress, USMCA would be a boon for Iowa and the entire country. The importance of trade with our North American neighbors can't be understated. It accounts for nearly one-third of our nation's agricultural exports, totaling over $40 billion and supporting more than 300,000 jobs."

PRESIDENT OF HM MANUFACTURING NICOLE WOLTER IN CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS: Trump's Canada-Mexico Trade Pact Would Give Illinois a Lift

"The International Trade Commission predicts that the USMCA would create 176,000 new jobs and increase U.S. exports to Canada and Mexico by $19 billion and $14 billion, respectively. ... The advantages of passing the USMCA are undeniable. The USMCA will expand Americans' access to the Canadian and Mexican markets, enable greater global competitiveness and increase American economic prosperity. It will support hardworking Americans who have jobs in manufacturing, both in Illinois and other parts of the country."

PRESIDENT OF THE ORANGE COUNTY BUSINESS COUNCIL LUCY DUNN IN THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Passage of USMCA Is Vital to Orange County's Future

"The passage of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, is crucial to preserving California's rich history of trade and it will help keep the region's businesses and job market thriving in a fiercely competitive world economy."

PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. BLACK CHAMBERS RON BUSBY IN THE ATLANTA TRIBUNE: New Trade Agreement Would Help Black-owned Businesses Prosper

"The number of Black-owned businesses has increased by more than 30 percent over the last decade to 2.6 million. Congress can boost that number even higher by ratifying the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement as signed by all three nations. This recently negotiated trade deal is full of provisions that will help Black-owned businesses create, grow, and thrive for decades to come."

PRESIDENTS OF SPARTAN MOTORS AND DOWDING INDUSTRIES DARYL ADAMS AND JEFF METTS IN THE LANSING STATE JOURNAL: Michigan Economy Relies on Tariff-Free Trade with Canada and Mexico

"There are no more important trading partners in ensuring our prosperity than our neighbors to the north and south. ...Without tariff-free trade across North America guaranteed by the USMCA, however, Michigan's manufactured goods exported to Canada and Mexico could face a minimum of $1 billion to $5.2 billion in extra taxes. Taxes like that could cripple many Michigan companies."
