LEADERSHIP. REACH. RESULTS.

Denver-- Colorado Business Roundtable and President Jeff Wasden announced today that Jeff will be exploring new opportunities as he moves to Washington, D.C. at the end of the year. Wasden was brought in to run Colorado Business Roundtable (COBRT) almost six years ago. During his time with COBRT, Wasden established the organization as a 501c6, created the state's most powerful Board of Directors from many of America's largest employers, created a partnership and sponsorship structure for the organization, established signature events and roundtables, and helped lead important policy initiatives in Colorado such as tax cuts, Export Import Bank reauthorization, Trade Promotion Authority, immigration reform, and USMCA.

Colorado business leaders' confidence has dipped into negative territory for the first time since 2011, as mounting concerns with trade, politics and general uncertainty increasingly weigh down an economy that continues to expand, according to the latest quarterly Leeds Business Confidence Index.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed landmark legislation to reform federal cannabis laws and reduce the public safety risk in communities across the country. H.R. 1595, the Secure and Fair Enforcement Act of 2019 (SAFE Banking Act) passed by a vote of 321 to 103. Authored by U.S. Reps. Ed Perlmutter and Denny Heck and cosponsored by Reps. Steve Stivers and Warren Davidson, the bill allows marijuana-related businesses in states with some form of legalized marijuana and strict regulatory structures to access the banking system. Today, 47 states, four U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia - representing 97.7% of the U.S. population - have legalized some form of recreational or medical marijuana, including CBD oil.

Gov. Jared Polis has big plans to fund education and clean air, coupled with a big promise to reduce most Coloradans' income taxes. How will he pay for the latter largesse? He's looking at you, the rich and powerful. "We're looking at all of the loopholes in the tax code that benefit the wealthy and well-connected, or the lobbyists, with a goal of finding what's realistic to reduce or phase out in order to reduce your income tax rate and the income tax of your viewers," the self-made tech millionaire turned politician said in an interview he gave at the governor's mansion to "The Aaron Harber Show."

U.S. trade with our North American neighbors has quadrupled in the past 25 years. In fact, a whopping 49 U.S. states count Canada and Mexico as one of their top three merchandise export markets. Watch the video to learn why it is so important for lawmakers to preserve and strengthen North American trade by passing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). American farmers, ranchers, manufacturers, service providers, and workers are counting on it.

Mr. Larry A Mizel, Doug Tisdale and South Metro Denver Chamber request the pleasure of your company at the fifth annual Chamber's Colorado Consular Corps Collaborative Celebration. This event is Wednesday, October 2nd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Lone Tree Arts Center. Tickets are $85.

President Trump and the leaders of Canada and Mexico announced the most significant trade deal in a generation a year ago this week. The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement is unambiguously a win for America. It would create new jobs, expand export markets, strengthen protections for workers, and generate billions of dollars in new prosperity. The USMCA would also help keep North America partners close while the U.S. hangs tough with China.

Gov. Jared Polis has thrown two major curveballs into the discussions around creating a mandatory paid-family-leave program for private-sector Colorado workers, asking a task force debating the subject to consider whether the insurance program should be run completely through the family market and whether small companies should be exempted from the mandate initially in order to get the program up and running quickly.

The requests, which came in a letter delivered Thursday to the task force, are significant because neither of those options was considered earlier this year as sponsors of a bill to create such a program amended and re-amended their proposal in order to try to find approval in the Senate, eventually turning the mandate to launch a program into a task force seeking to find consensus on a plan that's failed five times in the Legislature. Plus, they come just one month before the task force must deliver a series of potential parameters for the program to an actuary to estimate its operational costs, seeking to quell questions about program solvency that ultimately doomed its creation during the 2019 session.

In a statement Wednesday, Business Roundtable commended the announcement of a U.S.-Japan trade agreement that will open markets for the agricultural and industrial sectors while setting rules on digital trade. "We urge the Administration to build on this foundation and continue negotiations toward a comprehensive high-standard trade agreement with Japan that encompasses Trade Promotion Authority negotiating objectives and boosts all sectors of the U.S. economy," the statement said.

A CNBC "Squawk Box" interview of former EY Global Chairman and CEO Mark Weinberger on Thursday demonstrated the continuing high level of interest in the Business Roundtable revised Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation. For Weinberger's comments and additional coverage, click here.
