He was 67, having retired just one year ago.

Ball Aerospace has used a growth spurt adding 1,500 jobs over the past 18 months to make the company  reflect the workplace diversity ethic it has long espoused. The Boulder-based company's recruitment efforts started in 2016, and its support of women and under-represented minority groups helped attract a pool of candidates far more diverse than the industry as a whole. "We've been able to move the needle these past two-and-a-half years," said Mike Gazarik, vice president of engineering for Ball Aerospace. "We're very fortunate, and we feel lucky because we think it makes us a better company."

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all insurers that offer fully insured health insurance must pay an annual fee - the so-called health insurance tax (HIT). The fees are based on insurance premiums and insurers' tax is roughly proportional to their market share. The tax was designed to help fund the federal and state marketplace exchanges. In 2018, Congress approved a one-year moratorium on collecting insurer taxes for 2019. The moratorium is set to lapse in 2020 and insurers now face an estimated $16 billion fee in 2020. To recoup the cost of the tax, insurers are expected to increase premiums.

An employment attorney, an insurance company executive, a ski-resort operator and two small-business owners have garnered highly-sought seats on the Family and Medical Leave Task Force set up to study how such a mandatory system should be developed, giving business groups who fought the controversial leave proposal this past legislative system hope that their voices will be heard in the construction of the next such proposal.

Moves by governments on the front lines of oil and gas development are hinting at what Colorado's reformed oil and gas landscape will look like after the state finishes reforming its rules. Colorado's legislature set off months of new rule-setting at the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and the state Air Quality Control Council in April when it passed sweeping reforms of state oil and gas laws. A big part of the new law, known as Senate Bill 181, let cities and counties have more control in the hope it would lessen community controversies around drilling proposals. Recent decisions at the local level are pointing to what the future may hold for the industry.
