Many companies have adopted lean techniques in production but struggle to extend them into their office environments. Office operations can be difficult to improve in part because there is no tangible or visible product involved. The main “product” in an office setting is information. Waste in an office setting is difficult to see – it does not stack up between stations or fill a warehouse. Information may lie deep within a database or in someone’s head.

Applying lean in the front office is different than applying it on the factory floor.
